Many of us in NICER, especially those who trained outside of the classical allergy/immunology pathway, did not have the good fortune to meet Dr. Robert (Bob) Nelson until late in his career. Despite that, he made a definitively positive impact on the strategic vision of our consortium. As one of the earliest and most fervent advocates for NICER, Bob provided much valued senior words of encouragement and gently nudged us along to develop into a more inclusive and innovative network of clinicians and researchers from all areas of clinical and diagnostic immunology. True to his nature, he was a connector – always eager and willing to facilitate personal introductions and challenging us to build bridges between junior-senior members, across sub-specialty disciplines and to think outside the conventional diagnostic algorithms to help our patients. He was present at every educational conference, sharing his immunology expertise and always concluding his question with a “thank you” and a compliment to every speaker.
He will be remembered in equal parts for his enthusiastic curiosity, patience, and pursuit of optimized personal care. We at NICER are grateful for his talents and dedication to our NICER efforts. We remain inspired by his legacy in clinical immunology and strive to uphold his thirst for new knowledge, generosity, and collaborative community.
Please join the Clinical Immunology Society and NICER in celebrating Bob’s bright, spirited contribution to the field of clinical immunology on Thursday, January 13, 2022 @ 4:00p EST via Zoom. Together with our colleagues from the CIS, we will reminiscence and build new connections that Bob would so very much appreciate.
